ALTERNATIVE COMICS Technologically Natural Mutations

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics!

On the left two people can be seen growing and flourishing among the plants and foliage, peacefully moving through wondrous cycles. As a distorted reflection their counterparts lay entangled, dressed in suits, amidst a metallic cluster of technological tentacles. Each side embraces it’s unusual predicament yet in the center the two worlds collide with evolutionary results. The vines and computers meet head on, mixing and mutating into a strange new form. As the opposing developments amalgamate in bizarreness, one of the electric tentacles breaks free from the form. Swinging uncontrollably through the air around the newly conceived creation the wire persistently spews black liquids throughout the open sky. more at http://www.heyapathy-comics-art.com/

ALTERNATIVE COMICS The Billboards and the Violinist

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics

The city is a giant gear propelled by all the strange people moving through it. On the right a large female model is trapped on the face of a towering commercial skyscraper, her billboard belly partially assimilates and annihilates young women by way of a subliminal force. The ominously flickering screen engulfs the mind and bodies of it’s victims intrinsically drawn into a vortex of unobtainable dreams. The gears spins on. Fortunately one potential target has developed an immunity to the advertisements prowess, in a small apartment on the left a girl is learning to play the violin. The music, read from alchemic notations, surrounds her with an indescribably majesty protecting her from the devious destruction of the world and chaos all around… more at http://www.heyapathy-comics-art.com/

ALTERNATIVE COMICS Return of the Hero...

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics

After an annihilating battle with corporate masters and an endless barrage of billboard advertisements, the hero was left a mere skeletally deformed weak malformation. However having been reduced to a shamble zombie deprived of his identity and possessions the little decimated hero did not lose himself completely. Lying in an intoxicated stupor in a damp and dark alley the man started to dream. In his dreams he remembered his hopes and triumphs. Not the triumphs that he was celebrated for but an unexplainable sort of light. The trees grew in those dreams and so did the minds of the children and all things seemed free and energized as in the days of his former glory. Awaken by a siren the hero found his haziness cleared and stood up from the ground with an entirely new hope. Beside him lay some disregarded riot gear, an old police helmet and armour abandoned by a squad a few days back. The acidity of the rain and the alley itself, tinted the equipment and altered the colouring. As his flesh had yet to regenerate after the long court room conflicts he decided to protect himself with these strangely unique objects. Now in his weird new protective gear he could continue his fight without fearing publicity. He was burnt, scarred and hideously ugly but never so ready to enter the war for humanity…

ALTERNATIVE COMICS A Robotic Romance

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics

In this part of world, a strange as it is, there is little room for anomalies and everything is pretty much the same. All the houses are similar, the cars and the schools. And since the library only has online books now a days there is little left to remind us of the past. There is however one odd piece of land north about an hour drive through the suburbs from the city. Up there the whole landscape has been developed into homes with the bizarre exception of a few tiny acres. Surrounded on all sides by new homes and backyard fences sit’s a little farmland untouched and still used. An aging old man gets up every morning and works in the fields as though nothing has changed. He doesn’t care that all our food come from laboratories nor does he mind that he is able to produce very little. It seems that it is the habits and chores that he loves and has stuck to his calling for longer than I remember.

The man rarely leaves the grounds except for a Sunday mass and breakfast. Only a small convoy of trucks have ever entered which transport his goods to the hills. No developer, nor lawman, or even a guest was ever welcomed into his small private land. That is until recently. Lately the farmer has been seen relaxing a bit in the company of a young woman. Rumours have it they met at the diner after church. She was a charmer and apparently from a family of farmers so the old man was taken and took up a friend. Within weeks of her presence the farm started changing, the grasses grew longer and certain area’s turned unkempt. The farmer and the lady were seen more often in town and the eventual marriage came of little surprise.

After the wedding the farmer resumed his regular chores while his young wife seemed to scold him secretly and spent all her time on the phone. It was a hot sunny morning when the situation had escalated and the whole town had known of the newly weds incredible fight. Witness, and there were a lot of them given the houses around the farm, saw the women running across the fields yelling after the man as he near unconsciously ploughed. She was citing certain legal phrases no one else could understand and the farmer snapped out of his daze looking fearful and angry. That is when the accident occurred. His wife fell forwards and landed close to the plough which caught her hair violently shaking her about. When the farmer pulled her out there was no blood, nor bodily damage but her face had removed revealing a mechanical shell! The wife was made of metal and wires! Nothing more than a machine! Some of the witnesses claim that she even had electric tentacles under her false wig of human hair.

Nevertheless the couple have been in court ever since attempting to sort out the details of their inevitable divorce. It would appear that with out prenuptials the robot women is entitled to the farm though the farmer has taken up arms and refuses to finalize the divorce. At best he may win half the land but these proceedings get quite complicated and his case is a rather difficult one as the laws of robot right are still vague and open to interpretation. But for now the farm is quiet and still sitting in place. The farmer is tending his fields and the neighbourhood is watching curiously and wondering if the new houses destined to grow beside them will be bigger and better equipped than the ones they already own.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS a journey's end and recollections

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics

When last I found the time to record my mundane misadventures I was spiralling through a psychedelic vortex travelling from one City to another. The journey was inspirationally serene though the border crossing wasn't and eventually I arrived in the monstrous metropolis known as NEW YORK. A slight misdirection by our electronic navigator actually spit us out in the middle of Thursday night Manhattan Traffic. My father, Julii and myself crossed the chaotic island in it's entirety in-between taxis, limos, honking horns and suicidal pedestrians. It was raining hard which only made the whole thing much more fun, yet we survived unscathed and hit the borough of Brooklyn shortly past ten.

It was a hot afternoon in Brooklyn as we took up lodgings in a little apartment in Bushwick. It was truly an incredible little world entirely different from any I've ever witnessed. The area was completely Latino and beautifully filled with culture, music and life. At first I found our acceptance in the area strange as we were certainly the only white people walking down Myrtle Street, yet no body (asides from some gazes towards Julii) seemed to notice us at all. By the time evening fell I'd figured out why. Only a coulpe of blocks from our apartment was a hidden hipster club district built among various inconspicuous and apparently abandoned lofts which filled up with rich college kids from dusk to dawn. The two worlds seamlessly collided and interacted with out any particularly obvious prejudice though the lines between wealth and poverty were extensively visual. Despite this division, harmony prevailed and I fell in love with the people. places and undoubtedly the food. Although I could take or leave the blaring loud bass dance music at 7:30 in morning.

After the visitation we strolled through Battery park and caught the Staten Island Ferry so my father could get a glimpse at the Statue of Liberty. It was interesting to see how the New York boat accommodated the touristy long weekend and cruised closer to the statue than it would on a regular day. The Ferry is an important little piece of our memories as Julii and I commuted on it numerous times during our previous trip. We visited a 911 memorial and got some good coffee before making our way back to the city then our temporary home. After the visitation we strolled through Bttery park and caught the Staten Island Ferry so my father could get a glimpse at the Statue of Liberty. My dad on the Ferry. Thanks for planning this Amazing Trip!!

So what does all this have to do with alternative comics? Well first and foremost experiencing life, people, and cities is my greatest muse and second of all we planned this trip for a reason. Our final destination landed us in Washington Square Park, famous for it's community of street performers and buskers. This is where my comics and self really fit in as I unrolled my giant paper scroll and armed myself with some ink and a brush with the utmost intention of joining the show.

Washington Square Ballet and the parks house pianist
(this guy wheeled down his piano and joined various other acts depending on who needed him most!)

It was a too hot to start painting in the early afternoon so I waited for the heat to subside before getting to work. As luck would have it as we sat in the shade some of the other performers strolled up and joined us on the bench. We got an instant introduction and behind the scenes look at the world of busker and artist from the fabled New York Park. Believe it or not it was like looking in a mirror and listening to a recording of my self in Toronto. A small world with big ideas and despite all our differences we are all just the same. There were dancers and drummers and weirdoes alike all setting up stage as the festivities took over. I spent about three hours before sunset working on a large City of Gears and was completely consumed by the magic of Manhattan. I talked to people from all over the world, met many locals and performers as well. The highlight of the venture, though the entire interaction was amazing, came as I started to share my weird philosophies with several groups of onlookers. "The city is a giant gear, " said I answering a youngsters inquiries, " but it is up to all the crazy people to make that gear spin!" The kid replied "THAT"S COOL!" smiling to his father when a thick New York accent bellowed from another corner of the crowd "And it's TRUE!". I will say no more because just thinking about it gives me the shivers but at any rate I was there, in Washington Square and I was part of the show!

SEE YOU ALL AGAIN IN THE FALL
because of course I love NY!

Julii in Washington Square.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS STREET ART PART 2

Early street art displays continued from yesterday...

While being courted by several reputable collectors and galleries I repeatedly encountered two unusual trends. On one occasion a patron reneged on a large scale purchase after I refused to join him in his apartment for a private dinner. Similar motivations presented themselves in the galleries as I recall being pawed at and offered Champaign and narcotics during various early morning business meetings. The galleries that I was in talks with also had a tendency to request that I recreate drawings that sold well in the past only not as installations but in small marketable series. The combination of these bizarre social formalities and the creative restrictions led to my preferences of self representation and public exhibitions. However in hindsight I can see that these people were primarily attracted to the magazine attention and were not interested in the art. Since that time I have met and worked with many incredible gallery curators and who have supported me only the most honourable of intentions.

At the same time that I was exhibiting in the galleries, I was also experimenting with public venues. I displayed my artworks at the T.O.A.E. in both 2002-2003. The large scale outdoor festival presented an entirely different audience and approach from that of the art galleries. Thousands of people strolled through the exhibition. There were people from all over the world and of all walks of life. The show offered an incomparable opportunity to interact with many people, most of which had never even been to a gallery. I found this experience extremely inspiring and I met many amazing characters, from little children to Grand mothers. I don’t recall making any connections to the outdoor festivals and performing as a street artist at the time, but the outdoor festival interactions certainly prepared and inspired me to experiment in the streets.

It wasn’t until the spring of 2004 than the combination of a these past experiences and a new set of circumstances led me to display my art on the street. For the first time since 2001, I was unable to secure a winter exhibition space and was no longer eligible for the College’s scholarship competitions. I was hanging out in Kensington Market pondering what to do about my financial situation. I was out of house and work when I met some people who sold jewellery in the streets. Co-relating all my weird thoughts I instinctively asked if I could join them. I put a scrap of black cloth and a hand full of small drawings inside a little black box I could carry in my hand comfortably while riding a bicycle.

My first attempt was on Bloor street on an Thursday or Friday afternoon. My friends did very well selling pipes, and jewellery while I myself didn’t sell a single thing. I wasn’t to discouraged though and the street jeweller told me that the other spot was better. The following morning I went join the other vendors on Queen Street and the scene was entirely different. There were tonnes of people, other buskers and many vendors. The weather was perfect and there was lot’s of energized activity. I met a whole bunch of weirdoes and sold enough art to go back. I worked every weekend through out the summer of 2004 earning enough to get by, by drawing pictures in the sun. In these early experiments my display featured scribbled monster comics and creepy surreal roach humanoids accompanied by the occasional crawling pig’s head. continued tomorrow...

ALTERNATIVE COMICS The Case of the Missing Roof ...

HEY APATHY! Strange Alternative Comics

I woke up extra early this morning to an usually bright sun competing with a strong winter breeze. The frequently fluctuating weather stirred me from my slumber. As I turned on my side preparing to open my eyes, I thought of how strong the winds must be in order to so entirely penetrate my small bedroom window. Sitting up with a stretch and yawningly opening my eyes I shockingly discovered there was no roof on my house.

All of my belongings, the kitchen and bath, were undisturbed in there places only their was no roof nor any walls. I looked out over the street and into the park in amazement without a clue as to what to do. Only a small child running ahead of his mother to school took the time to glance upward and pass me a wave. No one else noticed. It was not by any means of disguise, the folks on the street simply never look up. They are all in a rush in the morning and most of them wore headphones or were occupied by small devices.

I tried calling the landlord but succeeded only in messaging. I also tried the papers but they were unimaginably difficult to contact as a celebrity was in town who'd been seen at a cafe. Finally I reported the incident to the police. I decided to make breakfast and clean up a bit and was thankful that none of the apartments amenities had left with the roof.

About an hour and a half, which I spent practicing the piano, after making my report the police finally arrived. At the same exact moment the land lord and a fire truck also pulled up. Two police officers and the proprietor of the rooms came crawling up the rescue ladder and over the side of house. After a brief fit of hysteria, the officials calmed my frantic landlord and entered into a line of stern questioning from which I learned of the shocking absurdities which made this fairly reasonable situation churn to a nightmare.

I gathered from the roof top inquiries that the reason for the extended delay on the part of the officials was due to the fact that they had passed my report as a crank file. It was not until the landlord corroborated my story that the response was sent out. However, the landlord's position regarding the occurrence differed quite drastically from what my own perception. The landlord, named James claimed he'd never heard of me. And what was worse is that he claimed that the house never even had a fourth floor! James had received my message, which was really weird because despite the fact that I remembered him as well as any tenant does his super, we had apparently never met. After hearing the strange recording he drove by to inspect his property and was compelled to venture immediately for the police.

I gave the police my identification which they had to send down the ladder, while several fire fighters inspected the roof. I saw them talking and scratching their heads before they turned to whisper something in the police sergeants ear. He relayed to me that the experts declared my relocation a task indefinitely inconceivable for any single man. They stated that certain construction, such as the sinks and cabinets would have taken much time and equipment to install in working order on top of a roof. Besides that the flooring a carpets were completely in tact. A survey of witnesses was hardly worth while, as the entire construction was in fact entirely impossible.

After this report the police relaxed a little towards me and another officer came up over the side. At this we discovered that my personal details were all in order. In fact even my registered address was almost the same. The street, house and apartment number all checked out, until a small discrepancy in the postal code gave way. This single letter difference revealed that my own apartment was on a different B------- Avenue!

A few standard procedures later and the chief detective, the first two officers, and a car load of curious firefighter's and myself drove across town to examine the apartment corresponding with the zip. The land lord stayed behind infuriated, however he volunteered to had arrangements made for the safe removal of my belongings. The drive lasted only minutes with the sirens and we arrived at the house. It was exactly like the one I'd woke up in only it still had a top floor. The street and the park were identical although I thought it best not to mention it. In the officer's eyes I was likely one stray comment away from the asylum.

We all entered the house and the other borders greeted me. Everything was in order as I'd remembered it to be. My key unlocked the top floor apartment but the rooms were entirely barren. Fortunately dust and age marks on the flooring perfectly mapped out the layout which had obviously been hastily removed. The investigators subsided that this was in fact an identical layout to the strange roof top anomaly and could certainly prove that all my furniture was once here.

The officer's asked my housemate numerous questions and perplexed by their discoveries decided to call the building's owner. James, the land lord of this second building arrived looking uncannily identical to the angered James on the roof. Even the officer's were startled. The only distinguishing characteristic I can explain was that this second James seemed that much more like my memories but not for any identifiable reason.

So following much deliberation, the police decided to release me though the courts will likely assign me the bill for returning my things. There is a moving company lowering the furniture as I write, and I am expecting all my possessions by six o'clock tonight. The officer's warned me that this would go in their files and that they would be watching in case of any further occurrences. My earlier suspicions were consolidated as the chief Detective turned back before exiting and said "You probably shouldn't talk about this much, you don't want to end up at the center for addiction and mental health." I glanced out at the frenzied streets, people and towers and answered unintentionally "I am already be there."

ALTERNATIVE COMICS MACHINE HEAD!

HEY APATHY! ALTERNATIVE COMICS CHARACTERS

A technological virus spreads throughout the streets of the City of Gears! Strange mechanized tentacles are assimilating thoughts, fashions, social interactions and mankind itself. Either a result of or the villainous proprietor, an ominous business demi-god presides over the atrocities. Shooting computerized appendages out into the crowd, the evil Machine Head perpetuates the dehumanizing epidemic!

Spent some time making more of these silly character descriptions for my website today. I've got enough of them done to publish an usual and entertaining webpage. Maybe tomorrow I'll get up to the work. Most of my time today was put into the animation and I may have over done it a bit as I feel particularly drained although it is still early. Staring over a light table and being forced to redraw the same picture over and over moving it only ever so slightly would make a great torture. I wonder if I could sell the technique it to the army?

ALTERNATIVE COMICS SURREAL SHOPPING SPREE...

\
..
Today the metropolis was blessed by a beautiful sunshine and warm springtime humidity that I found it some what difficult to resign to the studio. Pushing my papers aside and unplugging the machine, I grabbed a little cash a set out for the streets. I'd barely any plans, likely an organic brew, but I knew the inkling that my excited activity could only be nourished by some sort of shopping spree. I often find the act of searching through products and stores to be an invigorating and amusing pass time. I haven't any friends and no business to speak of, therefore my inclusion in spending gives me a deep sense of purpose.

I find the sequence of events necessary to make a purchase quite thrilling. I'll leave my house, move through transit, and arrive in a place where other people are. It makes me feel happily human. Then when I get into the shops, all the colours and choices! I can reject and collect whatever I fancy. I may file through records or racks of new fashions or purchase some food stocks or maybe an improvised treat. The shoe store is fun but not so much as the general  centers. Here you can ask people questions and peruse to no end. It is absolutely exhilarating when a package jumps off of the shelf and lands in my hands. Only some amount and 99 cents with all sorts of wonderful graphics and promises!

Sometimes I don't even bring my new toys home. If I've forgotten their importance or they become to much to handle I'll simply toss them aside and wait for my next inclination. Isn't it wonderful enough to just buy things! Some of the stores even play loud music and have sparkling lights with magazine cut outs inviting you in. If you come across such a magnificence you simply have explore.

I happened upon one such outlet on this afternoon's adventure. It was an enormous mega-establishment specializing in products with fancy packages all of which were either endorsed by celebrities or as seen on TV. I knew that this was my station. I strolled past the electronic greeter beaming with the utmost of confidence. Here I would shop and impress all that could see. I was certain that my social standings were about to be greatly enhanced as a result of my boisterous and skilful consumerist display . Yes, I knew how to shop, of that I was most confident.

Entering the isle ways I was quickly taken aback by a striking design. It appeared like a golden boulder sitting upon a pile of dull gravel. For a moment I worried that this was too good to be true and concerned myself deeply that my shopping may have ended to soon. Yes I wanted it, I'd heard of it, it was original, unique and entirely for me! No other parcel, nor package on any of the other shelves retained visibility. It was like me and the product were alone at a decadent ball. The muzak accelerated with a strange symphonic majesty and all of the lights in the store seemed to dim around us. I reached out in an instant, that lasted forever, and took hold of the box with the most joyous delight.

With the product now firmly gripped in my hands the entire store around me and my purchase turned pitch black. Standing in awe of the spotlight and my discovery, I surmised that this must be one of those retail promotions and that I had been made a champion. The proprietor and the public witnessed my extravagance and intended to reward and praise me for my expert consumerism. I knew that someday my genius would be celebrated for I was a shopper among shoppers in the highest degree!

The excitement crescendoed nearly beyond my control as electric currents surged from the insides of my teeth. Then in a kaleidoscope frenzy of logos and promos the entire room disappeared.

I saw a factory full of peoples from far away places.
I saw an armed soldier shuffling them in
and out through wired gates.
I saw a smoke stack and a river coiling with fear.
I heard the engines of planes, trucks and trains bursting my ears.
I saw a group of suited creatures, situated around a long desk,
each laughing and arguing with uncensored jest.
Then I saw the studies, and findings of man,
mass hypnosis, manipulated senses and of the wars in their plans.
I saw my product reproduced and purchased by many
and finally a garbage dump and transference of each penny.
The metal money was melted and churned into weapons
and before my purchase expired ten new ones had crept in.

Dizzily stepping backwards I bumped into another shopper who grunted at the unintentional obtrusion. I politely apologised excusing my self and turned towards the lines. Everything seemed normal again. I resolved that my vertiginous spell was likely caused by an empty stomach, unconsciously attempting to refute any possibility of the event being a side effect of shopping. Proceeding to the cashier I placed my purchase on the counter. "Cash or Credit?”. I hesitated,  looked down at the product, and before I could answer with  I found myself running down the wet and thunderous streets in a state of cursed  terror frantically seeking an advertisement-free route home. more art at http://www.heyapathy-comics-art.com/

ALTERNATIVE COMICS The Diabolical Business Demi-God Prevails!

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics Illustrations

Holding a billboard like a credit card, a diabolically monstrous Deity of the Financial District looms over the citizens of the City of Gears. Excreting medusa-like mechanizations from his open cranium, the fiscal atrocity attacks the minds, hearts, and souls of both unsuspecting and willing victims alike. The infinite onslaught of the technological tentacles perverts language and devolves social activities in a seemingly indestructible assimilation of mankind. The enormous distractions advertise a new world of techno-triumphs as they hypnotically influence the streets below. All encompassing and extremely well financed commercialization of humanities lost, can be found in the even the most miniscule and least travelled corners of the vast and spiralling routines known as the metropolis.

"The Villain" is a 20 x 30 inch pen and ink drawing depicting  comic book style personification of commercial influences and ideologies. Featuring a giant robotic business creature as an underlying urban entity, the drawing emphasizes the corruptive capacity of behaviours dictated by billboard advertisements. Of technical interest in this artwork is that while the majority of the drawing was done with fine point pens and extensive rendering, the billboard images reference my early street art and performance painting approach. The central advertisement shows an animated sequence involving a business mans head being removed by technological tentacles originating from inside the victims mind. These sequential storylines are made rapidly with brushes and often at a large scale infront of live audiences. The combination of the two techniques simultaneously permitted me to render multiple analogies within a single illustration as well as mark a point of reference in both the story arc and my own artistic development. more comics, myths, and art at http://www.heyapathy-comics-art.com/

ALTERNATIVE COMICS Technological Manifestations and Superhuman-beings!

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics

The city is a giant gear propelled by the endless spiraling of it's strange and diverse citizens. Centrifugally fused around the Eyeball of Consciousness, all of our thoughts, actions and routines are correlated amidst this orchestral frenzy. Despite this underlying humanistic entity, a surface mass assimilation of mankind is taking place. The urban landscape nutures a technological annihilation. Upon the face of the architecture a diabolic personification of the mass-media manipulation formulates. The giant mechanized alien growth gains momentum as  feeds and controls the minds of all who fall within it's shockwaves. The terrifying Billboard Robotics spew out technological tentacles in a well financed, researched, planned and aggressive attempt to enslave the metropolitan crowds. The horror of the homogeny incites one small individual to action. The protagonist dawns a mask and a cape decorated with eyeballs and flies directly into combat with the enormous flickering eememy advertisements.

This 20 x 30 inch pen and ink illustration features three major symbols from the HEY APATHY! mythology. These signifiers are comprised of the Superhero, as hope, a Giant Billboard Robot, commercialized ideologies personified, and the eyeball of human thoughts and dreams. The entire landscape is spun around the Gear shaped buildings and is representative of man's struggles with both progress and humanity. The entire drawing took about 8 hours to complete and was made on location in the streets of downtown Toronto. more art and weird explainations at http://www.heyapathy-comics-art.com/

Alternative Comics and the Anonymous Crowds

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics

Land of TV’s and the home of the slaves is a little commercial poster design I did to promote the earliest HEY APATHY! artworks. In those drawings the city was announced as a giant gear propelled by an endless sea of faceless denizens. Envisioning the city as a superficial conglomeration of misdirected commercial ideologies the nihilistic landscape paintings would often point a finger at the mass media.

The ridiculous commands put forth by the news, radio, magazines and movies appeared as an indestructible diabolic. It would seem that the business demi-gods had mastered mesmerism and therefore ensured the homogenized annihilation of man and women kind. Then I turned off the tele, found some good books, researched world films and documentaries and discovered a world so different from the one which had stolen all personality.

After my awakening I chose to investigate the matter further. I infiltrated numerous advertising agencies and bankers meeting quickly assembling the data to reveal a new dark truism. In fact I did not discover any plotting, scheming, nor even the slightest use of any sophisticated hypnosis, rather something much, darker, much more evil. The people whom I'd assume were manipulating the crowds were actually catering to their every whim. Nothing can be sold to the crowds that they don't really want. Many attempts would and will fail, but the darkest truth of them all is that we want it this way.
