HEY APATHY! Toronto Artist Gallery Drawings. These are some shots of large HEY APATHY! Ink drawings collected at the Cambridge Galleries. The Show featured a wide range of thematic explorations regarding the metropolis, chaos, people and the apocalypse. Most of the works were created with a hand made bamboo drawing instrument and black India ink. The drawings range in size from 2 x 3 feet to 10 x 16 feet. This exhibition also included an animated installation presented on a television screen embedded in the wall. This exhibition was curated by Sascha Hastings in 2006 and remains one of my most elegant presentations to date. FULL EXHIBITION HISTORY HERE

Strange Stories - The Deceptive Window
My miniscule and angular apartment boasts no luxurious features and has only one small window overlooking the outside world. The window is exactly 2 feet 8 inches wide by 3 feet and 6 inches tall except for when it is not. Sometimes the window is much smaller though it has never been any larger than it appears. The varying size of the portal is however manageable and of little concern. The truly disconcerting qualities, the sensations of uneasiness and disorientation, are coming from the things I see on the other side. The view is a clear and basic one, facing an empty skyline with few buildings or really anything at all. Oddly enough I am located in the heart of the big city, surrounded by corporate skyscrapers, condominiums, clubs, restaurants and malls, yet the placement and dimensions of the window have left me staring at an empty sky. There is however the top of a maple and a grouping of electric wires. At night the moon sits in the corner but the sun herself never passes me by. As such the scenery offers little more in it’s usefulness than a representation of seasons and possibly the weather.
The particular alignment of the buildings facade in conjunction with the sloped major road ways and metropolitan tower labyrinths has obscured not only my vision by the ability to listen too. With one of the few open passages amidst the entire urban landscape, the window sits directly in the center of a strange wind tunnel. The gusts travel to and from all ends of the city carrying unusual signals in uncertain waves. The sounds, combined with the rumbling from traffic below, sing through the apartment but bear no semblance to sense. It may sound like a massive parade going on but when I’d inspected, the street were all bare. Sometimes crystal clear conversations take place in this room and on other occasions I could’ve sworn my neighbors were partying excessively. Of course in each of these cases, the noisy culprits were only riding the winds.
Like the sonics it carries, the winds also move deceptively around. Often dancing with the tree just outside as well as stomping throughout my room. The patterns are so erratic that once with a swoosh I’d been blown off my chair. In another instant I battled with a pounding rainfall only to find a mere drizzle occurring outdoors. The opposite is also quite ordinary and days that appear still and beautiful turn out to be frozen by storms. Occasionally the window properly predicted the true conditions, but only often enough to keep me confused.
Even at this very moment things appear quite and the sun is shining. There is little noise and no winds blowing, even the tips of the tree are standing still. No, I won’t be fooled this time, I can see that misty stream of smoke. It is almost invisibly faded, yet most certainly there. That opaque smoke is from a furnace, and the speed with which it vanished must mean angry northern currents. I’ll stay here where it’s warm and cozy, but what if I’m wrong? What if it is s beautiful day? Maybe the streets are paved with music or spring blossoms and I am in here, trapped indoors? You never really can tell from this window. At least there is one thing certain in all this trickery and that is that the window always wins. No matter how I examine or analyze the situation, it incites in me an inspiration to get up, dressed, and outside to gaze firsthand into a world in which one never knows.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS ONLINE
A short comic following the dissolution and near instant replacement of an alcoholic hobo. Part of PHASE 1 The Replacements in which a series of unrelated peoples of varied societal positions are secretly and systematically replaced. New pages every Friday ( a little late posting here but I’m always on time over at heyapathy.com.
Haven’t been posting much stuff online lately kind of busy with some commissioned work and alas, it’s grant writing season again. That means I’ve got to hover over the keyboard excessively for hours of essay writings. I admit I enjoy the process when it goes smoothly, but me and words don’t always get along. Sometimes writing becomes a telepathic battle between what I’m trying to say and run on sentences, misused-nouns, the-the and other backwards, mixed up, and perverse ,misuses of grammar. Nightmares of a giant type face V or W threatens to stake it’s pointed extremities through me while I sleep. However I’ve no choice now but to dig in and give it it (just kidding) my best shot.

Alternative Comics Street Art and Performance Video
HEY APATHY! Surreal Comics
Just finished putting together this video of street art, performances and mural painting. The video will be projected tomorrow night on Queen Street West as an unofficial part of the 2010 Nuit blanche celebrations. Officially a selection of my animations will be included in the outdoor installation taking place at the main entrance of 401 Richmond Street ( a huge arts complex featuring galleries, studios and office stuff. Here's the write up for the video:
HEY APATHY! is an ongoing investigation into the monstrous metropolis. In the earliest works the city was announced as a giant gear propelled by an endless sea of faceless denizens. In order to best understand the phenomena in question I developed a particular artist's process involving outdoor festival performances, public murals and street art. By means of this unconventional interview I have since talked to thousands of people from all over the globe and of all walks of life. As a result both the artworks and myself have evolved immensely. Today my comics still depict the city as an ominous gear, only now it is up to all the strange and unique characters, not anonymous cogs, who fuel the machine.
This video features several timelapse documentations of my live performances and graffiti work as well as a little animation. Artworks 2002-2007, video by Slavek Smeigel and Craig Boyko. Experimental Soundtrack by Narsen Osutei, Mark vanZyl and Mike Parsons. All new surreal animations, weird comics, and cursed contemporary art at http://www.heyapathy-comics-art.com/

Alternative Comics an amorphous globular experience surreal
HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics
This is a little scene from the upcoming surreal web comic in which a somewhat unsuspecting shopper experiences the most horrific of hallucinations, maybe. This amorphous globular thing is one of the major symbols in a lot of my recent works. I won’t reveal it’s meaning here because it would spoil the fun and is clearly apparent in the short stories. The Surreal stories are illustrated fables combining comic book style imagery with the written word. It was really just a way to be creative when I was too busy to actually draw comic pages last winter. Though I still don’t have the time for full explorations, some of the stories are being featured as vignettes in the new strips. The drawing posted above is based on the short story “ A Shopping Spree Nightmare”. Keeping this sketchbook of comics while working on the major animation, has really helped keep my mind flowing while tackling the enormously repetitive task of drawing the cartoon.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS Broadcast to Oblivion
HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics
When we last left our celebrity news broadcaster (yesterday's post) he was entirely occupied by his own image. Spending hours upon hours, in between telecasts, the reporter watched tapes of his performances and practiced in the mirror. He starred at his reflection and videos with such concentration until one day he realized that he himself was the reflected image and not the actual man on the news.
Some more unfinished 8.5 x 11 inch sketchbook comics for the upcoming HEY APATHY! Surreal Web Comic. I really should try to keep up with the lettering as it is I have twenty pages to write in. When I work on paintings or even comic books full time, I like to work on one piece from start to finish. However when I am producing large quantities of drawings, such as animation stills, I will often divide the process between numerous artworks.
For example in a scene consisting of two characters, one black and one white. I might draw the white character 100 times, return to the beginning draw the black character 100 times, then start over again to paint the black character in 100 times. It’s like a factory production line. The problem with this technique is that the most mundane and repetitive parts of the process always get left, in abundance, until the end. On the positive side of my ever growing pile of unscripted comic pages, my lettering leaves much to be desired right now and a good solid week of practice should help me tighten up my cartoon calligraphy.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS Surreal Stories
HEY APATHY! Surreal Comics
Since my primary attention is currently being given to the development of an extensive hand drawn animation (sponsored by the Ontario Council for the Arts) my current artistic practice is rather repetitive and mundane. It takes at least thirty similar drawings to make a character move for a couple of seconds, so you can imagine it can be days of work before the concepts or technique evolve even slightly. However to keep my imagination from slowing to a factory like pace I am producing a number of short comics in my sketch book on the side.
These comics are turning out to be really fun. I have often kept a comic-sketch book as a means of stream of conscious expression. The idea is basically to use up a sketchbook entirely with comics so that the completed book could be presented as a work of art ( wouldn’t that be funny?). I tend to use a single page technique wherein each page is a whole strip or series of funnies. The cheap sketch book works well because it eradicates any intimidation freeing me of all preconceptions of what the drawing should be. I know that these cartoons have to be done quickly and are on low quality paper , therefore I needn’t bother with planning, revisions or technical fidgeting. The work just really let’s me explore my weird brain, letting whatever happens happen and try to figure out what it’s all about later.
I’ve done this experiment at least four times in which I produced two volumes of STUPID COMICS, a tastelessly twisted homage to Crumb and the underground comics movement of the sixties, three issues of DOWN, a surreal creature feature about men as monsters as well as machines, and a large graphic novel entitled THIS DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE. For the most part these books are compiled of single panel or page cartoons involving specific thematic and technical explorations using an unplanned free form approach. One of the most interesting aspects of each of these projects is how that despite being entirely unscripted and often plotted as individual parables, the books always end up stringing together chronologically to reveal a hidden narrative. I say hidden because one, the larger story-arcs are not always easily apparent and two, because I didn’t even realize I was writing them at the time.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS Ornamental Talismans
HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics
Most of the day was spent hovering over the light table and animation stand, although I still did some comics sketching in the park and finished these little ornamental talisman's designed for wrap around like on a mug or a biohazardous chemical waste cannister. From top to bottom the symbology is as follows; the machine as being, the black arts, the face of the metropolis, a surreal incident, and life and death in the city of gears.

Alternative Comics APOCALYPSE
HEY APATHY! ALTERNATIVE COMICS
An unseen hurricane type blast sweeps across the hordes of faceless little denizens splitting the tomb like tower and heaving it’s top through the sky. The apocalypse was originally a part of the first HEY APATHY! drawing series. The complete environmental installation included over 250 ink works ranging from photo to mural sized. The series featured seemingly infinite skylines filled by grave stone buildings and crowds upon crowds of anonymous dwellers coupled with images of the nuclear type annihilation of the repetitive metropolis. The drawings were originally exhibited at O.C.A.D. in 2001 but this week I am working on completing an animated version of the strangely iconic parable. The picture above is a collection of stills from the new cartoon. The entire animation, funded by the Ontario Council for the Arts, will be about two minutes or so and feature many of the designs developed in the HEY APATHY! drawings.

Alterantive Comics Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition
Just got in from day two at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. The annual public festival takes place at Nathan Philips Square and features about 500 hundred artist’s from all over the world ( except this year there are only 400 due to a portion of the grounds being under construction). Yesterday morning I set up my portable gallery in the pouring rain and didn’t see much action the until late afternoon. Today’s weather however, was perfect and the open air festival was busy. I met hundreds of people, many new and many old acquaintances. The most inspiring of all were the countless encounters with those little monsters we call kids.
Basically I spent the whole afternoon freaking out parents when the youngsters wanted to visit my booth. All the parents see is some guy dressed in black with a whole bunch of scary pictures and the reaction is generally one of apprehension . It didn’t matter today because if anyone even glanced at a drawing I had them trapped. I kept jumping up from working to explain the creepy creatures. I’d share a few tales eventually winning the attention of both the adults and kids. When their eyes bug out at a punch line I get overwhelmed by a strange sensation and somehow life seems that much less intolerable.
The show brings in tourists (though not as many as it used to) and all sorts of all ages and all walks of life. I met people from Montreal, Spain and had fun explaining the weirdness to some Hungarians who spoke absolutely no English at all. I talked with lot’s of other artists as well as with three Torontonians who had been imprisoned during last weeks protest. Damn this weekend has been fun and I get to do it all again tomorrow. The only thing that sucked was the sushi bar closed by the time the show was over and now I am home, sunburnt, exhausted and making my self a crappy pasta dinner. more at http://www.heyapathy-comics-art.com/

ALTERNATIVE COMICS A Robotic Romance
HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics
In this part of world, a strange as it is, there is little room for anomalies and everything is pretty much the same. All the houses are similar, the cars and the schools. And since the library only has online books now a days there is little left to remind us of the past. There is however one odd piece of land north about an hour drive through the suburbs from the city. Up there the whole landscape has been developed into homes with the bizarre exception of a few tiny acres. Surrounded on all sides by new homes and backyard fences sit’s a little farmland untouched and still used. An aging old man gets up every morning and works in the fields as though nothing has changed. He doesn’t care that all our food come from laboratories nor does he mind that he is able to produce very little. It seems that it is the habits and chores that he loves and has stuck to his calling for longer than I remember.
The man rarely leaves the grounds except for a Sunday mass and breakfast. Only a small convoy of trucks have ever entered which transport his goods to the hills. No developer, nor lawman, or even a guest was ever welcomed into his small private land. That is until recently. Lately the farmer has been seen relaxing a bit in the company of a young woman. Rumours have it they met at the diner after church. She was a charmer and apparently from a family of farmers so the old man was taken and took up a friend. Within weeks of her presence the farm started changing, the grasses grew longer and certain area’s turned unkempt. The farmer and the lady were seen more often in town and the eventual marriage came of little surprise.
After the wedding the farmer resumed his regular chores while his young wife seemed to scold him secretly and spent all her time on the phone. It was a hot sunny morning when the situation had escalated and the whole town had known of the newly weds incredible fight. Witness, and there were a lot of them given the houses around the farm, saw the women running across the fields yelling after the man as he near unconsciously ploughed. She was citing certain legal phrases no one else could understand and the farmer snapped out of his daze looking fearful and angry. That is when the accident occurred. His wife fell forwards and landed close to the plough which caught her hair violently shaking her about. When the farmer pulled her out there was no blood, nor bodily damage but her face had removed revealing a mechanical shell! The wife was made of metal and wires! Nothing more than a machine! Some of the witnesses claim that she even had electric tentacles under her false wig of human hair.
Nevertheless the couple have been in court ever since attempting to sort out the details of their inevitable divorce. It would appear that with out prenuptials the robot women is entitled to the farm though the farmer has taken up arms and refuses to finalize the divorce. At best he may win half the land but these proceedings get quite complicated and his case is a rather difficult one as the laws of robot right are still vague and open to interpretation. But for now the farm is quiet and still sitting in place. The farmer is tending his fields and the neighbourhood is watching curiously and wondering if the new houses destined to grow beside them will be bigger and better equipped than the ones they already own.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS A Heroic Assimilation
HEY APATHY! Alternative comics
Flicker, flicker, the gigantic screen transmits sublimated imagery faster than a speeding bullet. The repetitive yet ever so slight evolution of the messages bombards our homes, the streets and the theatre offering us heroic salvation with each flashing new scene. The superhuman, having arrived from a far off star , brings promise of hope and freedom as he expends his supernatural abilities in the name of justice. As his presence brings joy to the world with each new adventure, the attention mounts tensely and all eyes turn towards the alien.
At first he was publicized as an enigma, and shortly thereafter mimicked, but despite all his triumphs the man receives no solitude. He had devised a secret home far from civilization but the documentary crew sought it out for use as a stage. Forced to reside in among men of the city, the hero falls upon financial hardship. The monetary rewards for the dispersion of evil were few and far between until the sponsors stepped in. Running shoes, capes, band aids and ice packs and any and every other product under the sun would come to bear his likeness and dignified symbol until the media madness began to take it’s toll. After missing the opportunity to thwart a fascist power due to a photo-op worth millions the hero underwent an alarming change. Realizing that his battles proved far less profitable and that the villainous regime was disempowered just the same, the alien turned towards more commercial endeavours all but forsaking his predestined quest.
Over the course of a few months, several movies and commercials, the alien became fixated on a cola he’d endorsed. Supplied with a life time quantity the hero proceeded to devour first two, then three and as many as twelve cans per day. Oddly enough the reasonably harmless cola churned malice and addiction against the unusual extraterrestrials DNA. At first the consumption resulted in malaise but soon ate away at the soldier’s physique. His skin peeled off in a leprous fashion and his skeleton underwent painful malformations. His abilities subsided as did his will until there was nothing left of the once glorious figure but a zombie-like core. Fortunately for the corporations which proffered him wealth his deformations remain a secret to this very day and no one seems to miss the champion of the future because severak younger and palatable actors have filled his place.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS
HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics
The G20 has come and gone leaving little trace of having ever existed asides from a large quantity of indecipherable youtube videos, a couple of way, way, way, back page stories of human rights violation and a lot of disgruntled civilians recently released from the “Torontonamo” detainment facilities. The entire experience has culminated as a distasteful confusion that has amounted to little. It would appear that the summit has determined means of saving our worlds finances while the streets are barren and a strange air taints the public. For the most part everything is back to normal and the machine grinds on despite the attempted refute. I myself feel drained and distracted and can’t even believe my own eyes nor my words. The entire situation has painted a grim picture of humanity and government and psychological manipulation. I only wish there was a better way and that people could organize themselves, and I have to wonder how many protestors are now safely at home drinking corporate coffee and eating mass produced food-stuff because they can’t really afford to buy fair trade or organic. ( 700 grams of sugar/corn oil and peanuts is cheaper than 150 grams of peanuts alone?) Myself, I’m going to stop researching the unobtainable and return to my own brand of protest, writing stories, drawing pictures, and learning new words ( I made a list of 200 words long forgotten and secretly hide them in the sands of a children's playground this morning). Everything I saw and attempted to correlate throughout all the chaos was as fictitious as a movie in light of harsher realities. That is not to say that I’ll bury these occurrences in the back of my heart like the news has buried them on the back page. No instead I will draw upon my intuitive eye witness and transmute these emotions as reference and evidence for things I already know and have been dealing with for a long time. The real villains still lurk like literature devouring monstrosities corrupting innocent minds and perpetuating strange ideologies, so I will attempt to let my disoriented infusion of angered love for all peoples continue to manifest as comics for kids. After all I believe that there is much hope for the future and that future lies only in the minds of the young. ( You've got to believe in something when the world is unbelievable... HEY APATHY!)

ALTERNATIVE COMICS G20 Residuals
HEY APATHY! Alterantive Comics
G20 Residuals … So the so called riot has ended, the idiots in masks have vanished ( actually they are sitting peacefully in the parks bragging garbed in normal hippie street wear) and a lot of peaceful protestors have gathered to complain about their wrongful imprisonment over the weekend. As a result of the G20 exodus the police presence has finally subsided right? WRONG they are still here!!! I have seen almost as many cops, though mostly in squad cars, scavenging the city all freaking day. In fact there are currently 15 cruiser’s parked outside of my studio guarding a pub celebrating the world cup. This particular bar has been partying for weeks with good fun dancing, music, beer, plastic trumpets and flags but not once prior to the G20 protest did any officer take notice. Today they are walled in by our boys in black. I admit the cops look foolish, some of them were even in mild celebration over the football game, but they are looking for trouble an in excess of the norm. To me this is actually scarier than the entirety of last week because it would appear that Toronto has just slipped itself unnoticed a step further towards a real police state. I was just profiled again because my clothes are all black even though the summit is over and the intensity of the protests have all but entirely passed.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS G20 lock down
HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics
The temperature is heating up and so is park security for G20. The city is under lock down in order to protect the palace summit. Yesterday was rainy and thus very quiet though on Monday I found myself surrounded and questioned on several occasions by bicycle officers dressed entirety in black. Today was unusually hot and humid and I once again encounter numerous of Toronto finest enveloping thee parks all around my neighbourhood. In fact there is such an unusual air about that I was reluctant and specific about which book would come with me to the park. The volume I was carrying on my last encounter had provoked several inquiries so as that I felt best not to carry anything that could be considered radical. Sounds silly but I really didn’t feel like ending up in detainment so I brought Dostoevsky which was the least subversive in appearance so that I could read and feel safe.
This time however was very different and far more intimidating. Sitting in my usual spot in the grass preparing to read my book I noticed an oddly inconspicuous unmarked van with tinted windows making a poor attempt to reverse park down trafficked one was strip. I thought it was funny to see the police officer behind the wheel struggling as the passing driver honked and threw curse words without realizing who he was yelling at. Before I could enjoy the humour of the parking situation the entire end of the park was consumed by nearly identical vans differing only in a choice between three dark colours. It was frightfully dreadful to be sitting with a book in the shade of the park while the perimeter is surrounded by swat teams and fenced off by unmarked vans.
It became difficult to read as various conversations between the officers and several regular park goers were at first rather loud. The tension ceased almost instantly and turned pleasantly casual as the officers were only stopping for lunch. Some of them made jokes with the citizens but mostly they ate regimentally and silently and often unseen. One by one the van doors would opening revealing small packs of cops and then someone would carry out there waste. They all wore black sun glasses and despite some bubbling very military in motion and vanished near as quickly as their surprising arrival. It turned out that a small protest had broke out in the large park across the large road from this one so their was little attention paid to those of us who’d been target back on Monday. Now the cops had some real villains. A group of hippie protestors waving paintings standing in the park. I walked by on my way home for lunch and saw the vagrants and vandals there must have been about 20 of them surrounded by thrice as many officers. I doubt anyone got hurt.
My studio was to hot for working even with the conditioner and two fans, so I went back to the park to finish my book and wait for the sun to settle. There were no signs of any officers on the main strip or throughout Kensington but when I settle down on the grass I noticed someone peculiar. There was a van on the corner only this one had decals advertising some obscure moving company. The driver was in a blue uniform and cap but his darkly shaded glasses seemed strangely reminiscent of the brigades fashion from the morning. He must have sat for an hour before starting to circle the park. He passed me about ten times before resigning to another spot. It was during his second rest that a few people started to smoke reefer and play their guitar not far behind me and not far from the van’s open window.
Sure enough within seconds there was a herd of bike cops flying in from unseen corners yelling “Who’s smoking the pot!” Whoever it was saw them coming because the smell vanished simultaneous with the invasion. However a couple of teenagers who just happened to be strolling by were horded, searched and questioned because one of them was wearing an anti-G20 t-shirt. The kids had a whole bag of the shirts and were going to sell them at the protest but the cops scared them good and the youth zipped up a hoody before he was freed. A hoody over the t-shirt in the hot and nasty humidity.
I was fortunate enough to have this entire affair to occur only two feet behind me. I pretended for a second that this was a normal part of life and attempted to keep reading. I was interrupted by a hovering officer who proceeded to interrogate me. I’ve gotten my response down now thanks to experience and was able to relinquish his suspicion with a single sentence. These guys were not funny, nor did that treat any of us like people as the other soldiers had, and I could sense that they were bored and blood thirsty with out any prey to satisfy their hunt.
