HEY APATHY! SURREAL COMICS

So I’ve been into some books as of late, just something I always promised myself to do but never had the time. As I’ve tread through the pages of some of the most wondrous works, Kafka, swift, Dostoesky and Orwell I’ve noticed an alarming trend. The hero ( a mockingly absurdist titile) is always a social misfit, a trouble unable to coexist in a world of false faces, weird logic, and the devious empowerment of high society and government. The hero always exposes the fraudulent world representing humanity, hope, and generally common sense. However, as I’ve already mentioned, these heroes are misfits.

In almost every case we, the reader, are brought to identify with these abnormal visionaries and learn to be sympathetic with their outsiderness. We, the reader, learn from the heroes follies of the problems of our world. We learn about good, evil, politics, control and we see the problems in a new light. A light which inside each of our isolated existences appears to make sense. We understand these miscreants and we understand the worlds they preside in as if they were our own. Didn’t you feel the cold grey hard cinder blocks being piled around you as you enjoyed 1984?

Herein lies the dilemma. Can we all really be Winston Smith, the Idiot, or Meursault? I mean these books sell, more than that, they are immortal, they are read in schools, they are everything. and everywhere. But if that is the case how can the world still be a the beck and whim of the diabolical demon? How can we keep on keeping everything down if we alll understand the outsider? It perplexes me to think that anyone who has read these books is anti-sympathetic with the hero, yet have these works had absolutely no effect on our behaviour? Are these works beautiful for their collective expression or are they merely celebrated in jest as of the words of madman. Maybe the are appreciated simply for being completely different, insane if you will, from the standard thought processes related to the human condition.

It is just a little paradox running through my brain right now. How can so much intellectualism be awarded merit yet so easily disregarded in practical terms. All the best literature runs the same vein. They all say the same thing and they are all proffering warnings. Warnings that seem to be lost along a shelf of dusty books. At least Orwell’s work won’t make it to the next generation ( copyrighted off of kindle as far as I know) so they won’t have any excuse for nt undstdn @ txt or subtxt. Anyways I feel as many of those characters did and I’ve spent all my time working towards a better existence. Mostly because I am crazy but also because I’ve nothing better to do with my time. Ps I’m going to try to approach this subject again but really wanted to see what would happen if I started randomly jotting some points on the subject)

Alternative Comics Animation Stills

HEY APATHY! Surreal Comics!

Still plugging away at the apparently endless ( unlike the finances) pile of drawings for the new animations. Also found some time this week to get the next pages of the online comic ready and handled most of the bureaucratic chores which bog down the unrepresented artist.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS Return of the Hero...

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics

After an annihilating battle with corporate masters and an endless barrage of billboard advertisements, the hero was left a mere skeletally deformed weak malformation. However having been reduced to a shamble zombie deprived of his identity and possessions the little decimated hero did not lose himself completely. Lying in an intoxicated stupor in a damp and dark alley the man started to dream. In his dreams he remembered his hopes and triumphs. Not the triumphs that he was celebrated for but an unexplainable sort of light. The trees grew in those dreams and so did the minds of the children and all things seemed free and energized as in the days of his former glory. Awaken by a siren the hero found his haziness cleared and stood up from the ground with an entirely new hope. Beside him lay some disregarded riot gear, an old police helmet and armour abandoned by a squad a few days back. The acidity of the rain and the alley itself, tinted the equipment and altered the colouring. As his flesh had yet to regenerate after the long court room conflicts he decided to protect himself with these strangely unique objects. Now in his weird new protective gear he could continue his fight without fearing publicity. He was burnt, scarred and hideously ugly but never so ready to enter the war for humanity…

ALTERNATIVE COMICS A Heroic Assimilation

HEY APATHY! Alternative comics

Flicker, flicker, the gigantic screen transmits sublimated imagery faster than a speeding bullet. The repetitive yet ever so slight evolution of the messages bombards our homes, the streets and the theatre offering us heroic salvation with each flashing new scene. The superhuman, having arrived from a far off star , brings promise of hope and freedom as he expends his supernatural abilities in the name of justice. As his presence brings joy to the world with each new adventure, the attention mounts tensely and all eyes turn towards the alien.

At first he was publicized as an enigma, and shortly thereafter mimicked, but despite all his triumphs the man receives no solitude. He had devised a secret home far from civilization but the documentary crew sought it out for use as a stage. Forced to reside in among men of the city, the hero falls upon financial hardship. The monetary rewards for the dispersion of evil were few and far between until the sponsors stepped in. Running shoes, capes, band aids and ice packs and any and every other product under the sun would come to bear his likeness and dignified symbol until the media madness began to take it’s toll. After missing the opportunity to thwart a fascist power due to a photo-op worth millions the hero underwent an alarming change. Realizing that his battles proved far less profitable and that the villainous regime was disempowered just the same, the alien turned towards more commercial endeavours all but forsaking his predestined quest.

Over the course of a few months, several movies and commercials, the alien became fixated on a cola he’d endorsed. Supplied with a life time quantity the hero proceeded to devour first two, then three and as many as twelve cans per day. Oddly enough the reasonably harmless cola churned malice and addiction against the unusual extraterrestrials DNA. At first the consumption resulted in malaise but soon ate away at the soldier’s physique. His skin peeled off in a leprous fashion and his skeleton underwent painful malformations. His abilities subsided as did his will until there was nothing left of the once glorious figure but a zombie-like core. Fortunately for the corporations which proffered him wealth his deformations remain a secret to this very day and no one seems to miss the champion of the future because severak younger and palatable actors have filled his place.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS Street Art Chronology Stories from 2005 part 2

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics STREET ART Chronology

The street season of 2005 pushed my artworks and presentation techniques in all sorts of new and innovative directions. In the earlier part of the season I switched from using my hand carved bamboo pen to using a brush. At first this transition was primarily for filling in large black areas, but the swift fluidity of the brush soon replaced the pen for all of the work. This new instrument permitted me to make faster and larger drawings which were much more exciting for the audience to watch. I also started producing small framed artwork which were simultaneously more marketable and the perfect paper weights to prevent my drawings from blowing down the road. The artworks steadily grew in speed intricacy and size so that by the end of the summer I was using up about 20 x 12 feet worth of the city block.

The first day of live painting (described earlier in yesterday's post) included some bamboo pig heads, monsters and robots. The poster sized artworks each featured a single character and were made entirely with the clumsy bamboo pens. All of these drawings, although unique depictions, were based on previous designs I’d exhibited in the galleries. As the summer moved on I continued to explore similar imagery only using the brush. The drawings got a bit more simple but could be made incredibly fast. At first these images also mimicked and expanded on my older designs but before the mid point of the season new monstrosities started to appear. More and more human depictions were directly resultant of my interactions on the street.

HEY APATHY! 30 x 40 ink on paper street drawings
STREET ART 2005 4 x 6 foot Transformation Scrolls

As the imagery changed so to did the format. The 30 x 40 inch poster sized ink drawings grew into extended 2 x 4 foot animated narratives, the to 4 x 6 foot large format paintings. The sequential scrolls featured strange transformations of man into monster, animal and machine. The large images started to revisit the metropolis and the ominous gear from my first series only now the examination was drawn from the vantage of the street. The faceless cogs and anonymous creatures now presented themselves as a amazingly diverse crowd. Each individual depicted in the artwork, though still alienated, had a story of their own. In the final weekend before the summer closed I completed a 10 x 15 foot large mural of Toronto. The image featured a military attack on an armoured hero inspired by a short work by Kurt Vonnegut. The artwork took three days to complete created primarily with brushes but detailed extensively with my old bamboo pen.

10 x 15 foot "Death of a Hero" Toronto Mural.
(Duct taped to street wall with my duffle bag in the left corner)

Like the size of the artworks the crowds too perpetually expanded. A larger number of onlookers were taking interest and I was moving a lot of art. The small tool kit was a thing of the past as my display now overflowed 2 large duffle bags with an additional large roll of paper. In fact I found my self making inopportune mission biking to the dollars store to restock on frames. At first I would spend the mornings making small brush drawings but soon the demand was keeping me up most of the night. It got to the point were I was making batches of fifty brush monster drawings more than 5 times a week. Of coarse where there is action the is usually trouble and it became evermore difficult to avoid the bi-law consequences Continued tomorrow ...

ALTERNATIVE COMICS The MISSING ARTIST

HEY APATHY! Alternative COMICS

First of all let me introduces myself. My name is Blackbeard Daunkleweed and I am an employer and aquiantance of the artist who usually posts in this journal. I worked extensively with Mike Parsons last year on a project involving numerous unusual portraits and had left a book in his possession which I need to get back. The lad was supposed to meet me this afternoon but failed to show up to make the exchange, Naturally I'd assumed the worst of the freelance illustrator and decided to visit his studio for my goods,

I broke into this place only a few minutes ago and discovered the artist was nowhere in sight. There are no signs of a disturbance though the dishes are from yesterday, and his computer was left with yesterdays post on the screen. After reading his story I have figured the word. I taught that boy much etiquette on our travels together but never the less the idiot has gone astray. In yesterdays article, cut short mid-sentence, Mike made mention of some folk it ain't right to talk about and has surely paid the price.

Luckily for Mike I know all about this and though I'm not so stupid as to write out the details. Let's just say that by breaking the silentium, Mike is likely been imprisoned and I'm sure I know where. Since the book I require is not on the premises I guess I'll rescue the bastard and put things back in place. No worries, I'll have you're foolish alternative comics bloke back by tomorrow's post.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS routine atrocities...

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics.! If any of you have been following these journals you may already be familiar with the creepy research and developments of the sub-human, yet ultimately superior, breed of creatures known only as invisible. The strange monster people are of the most powerful intellect. Their abilities to process data and patterns have far exceeded even the most analytic of mathematicians. The most terrifying part of the whole business is that their studies involve human behaviour and the mapping, recording and planning of our routines. The process is beyond scientific as "the invisible" processes our experiences like a chemist processes  drugs. At any rate the members of this society have figured out life's patterns to such an extent as to understand our every move.

Sometimes they even enter our homes unobserved. In fact they move so intuitively in-between our routines that they are capable of following you through you kitchen or bath with out ever being seen. Truth is they look just like ordinary people, yet through their extraordinary research they have moved beyond normal senses. It is no trick or illusion or fictional power, it is simply a sophisticated formula devised of repetitious movements and peripheral avoidance. Fortunately I have not figured out their intentioned but would prefer not to speculate. I know one of them is here now but no matter how quickly I turn they can predict ( although I believe the term inaccurately describes their prowess of deduction) a cannot catch a glimpse. The only thing that I am certain of is that they don't like to be discussed and that most anyone who has mentioned them soon thereafter disappears. Any ways on to another subje

Alternative Comics Brain-Worm-Thing

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics

Many of us who've taken an interest in the weird development known as progress, often ask our selves a variety of questions concerning man's limitations when travelling through land, space and time. Just such a query was tempted my way this morning as I received an email notice that a local company trading in technologies was about to unveil a new device. The advertisement invited those selected to join in a midday presentation and at a chance to purchase the product at an unbelievably low introductory price.

I'd nothing much better to do than to investigate further so I attended the presentation with little debate. The new electronic was introduced although no a member of the crowd could have guessed it as the tiny computer looked an awful lot like a worm. The spokesperson held proudly in her manicured hands a small cup of fishing bait expecting our applause. " This little computer will change the way we travel. It's amazing capacities are beyond any of last years lines!" The model slipped in her excitement and toppled the container sending some of these "worms" reeling to the floor. There was a bit of a disturbance as some security blokes rushed to the stage. However a few seconds of whispers and shuffles restored all composure and the presentation proceeded as though uninterrupted.

The announcer began describing the prowess of the worms. She told us that it's virtual simulations bordered on reality. Claims were made that the device would be faster, infallible, and of the utmost import. As the speaker continued I could almost imagine the effect. Instantly the surroundings started fading away and I found my self on an island of tropical decent. The sun started shining and birds passed the sky as I felt a new relaxing sensation warm me up more than beach.

Information passed my unconscious in a flickering script and before I could enjoy the euphoria I knew that my files had been sorted. All of my office work for the next three full years flashed through my mind's eye and were orderly complete. Then I watched movies in a half of a second. The entire film cohesively was implanted in my brain. And as the experience became joyous when I connected with friends. Suddenly there was everyone that I'd ever met. We were all on the island chit chatting away in near perfect utopia when the strange sound began.

I was laughing uncontrollably in the ecstasy as the piercing began. At first a soft ringing, but growing steadily louder, the noise started aggravations before actual harm. Eventually I forgot all my hallucinatory fantasies falling sweaty to the floor red faced grasping my ears. Louder and ill-pitched by the second I felt the urge to scream loudly but couldn't bare another sound. Hands started on my shoulder trying to hold me and I saw shuffling around at my feet. The noise blacked out my vision and I heard the announcer's voice trying to calm the obviously distressed onlookers.

When I awoke I was in my apartment completely free from all pain. I'd no idea how I'd gotten there nor much recollection of the time in between. Of coarse this left me rattled so first I went for a short walk. After breathing some fresh air I returned to the computer. The email notice had been deleted from my files and though I contacted the tech company no one seemed to know anything of the worm. Now once again acting naturally I laid on my bed, another bad dream perhaps or only a story? It was just before passing into a slumber that I resigned to belief in these logical explanations. That's when I heard the other sound. It was all bass and liquid completely different from the nightmarish pitch which rendered me unconscious but it came from the same source. Deep within my ear the noise ruggedly escalated but before it evolved to terrifying volumes a large squish signalled it's end .The little metallic brain-worm-thing excavated itself from my cranium slopped on to the floor an escaped into a crevice beside the internet wall jack under my desk.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS MONSTER PIXIES

So the little tiny person sitting on a prickly stemmed plant in the middle of the park, broad daylight, says to me, "The hardest part of writing a story is figuring out how it ends. If you do that first, the rest should come easy" after which he flew away.

We had argued for some time over numerous park etiquette as the 3 and a half inch tall person had felt I intruded on it's space. Intruded? I didn't even see him and besides I was quietly reading my book. How could I be disturbing anyone of in my own little world. The pixie grunted back that I had blotted out his sun, but rapidly switched te subject and criticized me for my book.

The debate rambled on about this and that of how books are useless especially those made of fiction! The imp stated that no man had much of any reason to say and that even those who would author nature would print it on her corpse. No there was no way around it and by the end I almost agreed. Most of what people say is nonsense and why celebrate those who'd been published.

At this I turned to documentaries. Surely biographies and historical account are of great value. "Lies, half- truths, propaganda! All of it ill used!" The little monster grew fangs and interjected that even those words were all corrupt. So without any further counter points I conceded that the past time was merely a hobby, by which I could escape my mundane routines. The creature now turned darker, more prickly and I'd most certainly come to fear it, when with a hiss all fangs and vibrato the creature announced " Escape your routines! You've blocked my sun every day at 3 o'clock and the terrorization begins at noon on the weekends! " With that the being said the bit about the story and was off never to be seen again.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS STREET ART!

HEY APATHY! ALTERNATIVE COMICS The STREET ARTIST

HEY APATHY! is a cross genre anthology of interconnected tales from the monstrous metropolis known as the city of Gears! The entire is told from my perspective as a tiny street artist exhibiting and documenting in the middle of the madness. The entire series simultaneously introduces us to the imaginary City and shares my unusual experiences as a public performer.

When I first documented the city I rendered it as an ominous gear propelled by an endless sea of faceless denizens. In order to investigate the situation further I set out to the heart of the downtown core and started doing street art exhibitions and live painting demonstrations. During that time I met many a weird denizen and peoples from all over te globe and of all walks of life. I also developed an extraordinary skill by which large format ink murals appear instantaneously in front of large audiences. As a result of these public experimentations both the artworks and myself have evolved immensely. Today I still draw the city as a giant gear, only now it is all the unique and crazy people, not faceless cogs who fuel the machine. HEY APATHY! is an explanation of the unexplainable absurdities of urban existence and my internal debate between the world of comics and facing reality..more at http://www.heyapathy-comics-art.com/

ALTERNATIVE COMICS More Samurai Charater Descriptions

HEY APATHY ALTERNATIVE COMICS CHARACTERS

AUDUBON was once a great ranger and protector of the fabled Green Forest. With the aid of a Jungle Cat and a team of aboriginal and volunteers, Audu fought off poachers, disease, development, and disaster until the government withdrew his funding and sold the land. Once an endlessly resourceful land of mystic wonders, the Green Forest is now but a mere fabrication. Disturbed into silence, the near mute Audubon left the forest by foot, crossing the Continent until fatefully stumbling into the Old Man's Repair shop where he took to menial chores and has resided ever since.

The Street Artist. Mike Parsons is a little street artist and performer who sets up on the corner across from the Old Man's repairs shop. Although he'd won several scholarships from the Art Institute and was featured on the covers of magazines while exhibiting his drawings in galleries, Mike walked off of the glamorous path and took his investigations to the streets. Compelled by an unearthly desire to actively initiate intellectual discourse on a mass scale, Mike sits on the streets observing and talking to people while he draws enormous and almost instantaneous ink murals.

The Old Man owns and runs the computer repair shop. Once a legendary Guardian of the City of Gears, bureaucracy has since sent thte hero into hiding. Unassumingly working in minor cybernetics, the Old Man has built an adopted family out of some powerful, unique and unusually gifted employees. He always knows more than he says and is likely assembling his new family against future aggressions no one else has predicted. more at http://www.heyapathy-comics-art.com/

ALTERNATIVE COMICS Samurai Characters

Some days move quicker than others, and that speed seems often correlated to the amount of things one might desire to accomplish. It feels as though I just awoke, and although I had an extensively productive 12 hours, it also feels as though little was done. I spent the morning working on the animation project ( funded by the Ontario Arts Council. Following the drawing session I retreated to the park to get in some reading. At the 2 hour mark my thoughts turned from research to the my chores on the computer so I returned home and started scanning pictures. My day was then interrupted by nature as my stomach grew thin. Alas with no groceries, dinner became a two hour venture. After shopping and cooking and cleaning (though not fully) I finished a comics scribble that had sat untouched for two days and finally got back on the computer where I had really hoped to work on my HEY APATHY! Character's page for the website. It's now fairly late, so I doubt I'll put the pages together 'til the morrow so I'll do some rough previews here before I give in.

\
HEY APATHY! is an ongoing ,monster comics investigation of the city, the people and the strange interactions which make up life in the big city. Samurai is a wandering Ronin often spotted in the down town core. His mission, although cryptic, seems to revolve around a quest to battle an ominous entity personified as a gigantic technological eye. As Samurai tracks the creature, numerous miniature and diabolically technological optics attempt to disrupt his investigation. As his pursuit gains ground Samura encounters many weird denizens , some who wish to help and others who wish him harm. Although the Samurai himself is not entirely certain of the motives behind his quest, he learns more than he ought to upon meeting an elder and a group of misfit vigilantes working out of a computer repair shop. The old man entangles the Ronin is a plot of resistance against the mad mechanizations of the modern world with promises of information and certain resolution to his hunt for the giant computerized eye! Read the whole story in HEY APATHY! Book Two.

JUNIOR the MECHANIC. Junior was born in the downtown core of the City of Gears. At an extremely early age Junior began developing mathematical, scientific, and mechanical skills of an unprecedented nature. However Junior’s abilities seemed to come at a strange price. Junior's enhanced insights extended far beyond chemistry and mechanics so that his understanding of politics and anthropology were nearly unbearable at the age of nine. Before his tenth year, Junior started hiding his gift and withdrew himself playing the quiet invalid in the back of the class. Despite the facade, an older gentleman hired Junior to work in a computer repair shop before his first year of high school. With his concerned parents blessing, Junior moved into the repair shop and has been quietly fixing computers ever since.

The Witch. Argenta, another of the Old-mans adopted vigilantes, was born of an occultist coven notorious for having quarters near the docks. The terrible cult had been responsible for many unspeakable deeds and rumoured to partake in the ritual of human sacrifice. During the Christmas Season of 1986, the diabolic club attracted a lot of attention as a result of numerous fires corresponding with a spree of vicious kidnappings. The City's Guardians connected the incidents before the fires raged out of control. Amidst the terrifying telepathically induced hallucinogenic battle, One of the Guardian's rescued a small orphan. Though at that younger age he'd no idea what provoked him to adopt the child, today the Old Man realizes that this potential sacrifice was one of their own. Fortunately as a result of her extraordinary up bringing, Argenta only uses her manipulations to prevent others of her lineage who still seek new and dark times.

HEY APATHY! is a cross genre anthology of interconnected parables involving the strange denizens and unusual occurrences from the city of gears! The entire mythology is told from the perspective of a young street artist (me) as he documents the events of the chaotic mega-city. All around the metropolis a bizarre epidemic is inflicting the citizens. Strange technological tentacles are assimilating mankind! The mechanizations appear of out the sky, out of nowhere, and from the insides of peoples minds. Can a group of unique and heroic characters prevent the dehumanization? We'll find out when I actually finish drawing all the books. see more at http://www.heyapathy-comics-art.com/

ALTERNATIVE COMICS STREET ART PAINTING PERFORMANCE

HEY APATHY! ALTERNATIVE COMICS STREET ART PERFORMANCE

HEY APATHY! The City is a giant gear propelled by all the different and crazy people moving through it. In order to investigate the monstrous metropolis and it's diverse and absurd denizens, I started setting up large black and white street art displays in downtown Toronto. By exhibiting and experimenting in public, I was able to learn many things about architecture and others having talked to thousands of people from all over the world and of all walks of life.  This video is a time lapse documentation of a typical day in my life on the streets. The 10 x 12 foot ink mural features an iconographic City of Gears and was made in 3.5 hours. Time lapse Photographed by Craig Boyko.

Close-up of finished CITY of GEARS street mural. During the busy and seasonable summer weather, I often would often set up on the concrete and get to work. In 2007 I made 27 of these giant performance drawings but have since been spending more time on comics and animations.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS HEY APATHY CHARACTERS

HEY APATHY! ALTERNATIVE COMICS

I've been working on animation stills and website stuff for most of this hot and humid blaring overcast day. I want to add a page describing the comics characters but didn't get that far with all the other things I had going on today. So although my body is tired, the caffeine is still in my brain so I'll ramble off some of these background stories here befor I go to bed....

From Top Left

Audubon the Tracker. Audubon was once a mighty forest ranger. He protected the vast resource and it’s obscure and dangerous inhabitants known as the green forest. For many years people tried to destroy the land Audu was sworn to protect. No fire, nor disease, nor diseased poacher could tackle Audu and his team. No the land stood strong until the hands ofbureaucracy reached out and destroyed the woods. Since the fall of the green forest Audubon has found himself a new home in a cybernetics repair shop in the City of Gears.

Junior the Mechanic. Junior is an ingenious inventor and master of cybernetic technologies. Mack has made advancement far greater than any other known to public or military. Amoung his greatest inventions are detachable cyber-limbs and man operated battle droids. However despite his potential Junior also spends his days working in a downtown computer repair shop.

The Old Man. The Old man, and proprietor of the repair store, likes to walk around the streets using Juniors mechanical creations, but is in fact confined to a wheel chair without the innovative assistance. The Old Man, like all old men in comics, knows more than he's ever saying and has some of the most interesting fables to share with his guests

Samura Wakayama is a wandering Ronin in pursuit of a giant mechanical eyeball. Various smaller mechanized monstrosities pester Samura on his quest, but determined to track his enemy the Samurai treads on. Stumbling into the old man's repair shop, the loner gets mixed up in a strange plot and many secrets are revealed.

Argenta is a witch and the daughter of the Old man . Argenta, as all witches these days, practices her art through the computer. With an indescribable ability to communicate and manipulate people through the machines, Argenta born of dignified lineage, only uses her powers for good.

The creature at the bottom is a giant Billboard mechanized sentinel. These monstrous mechanics are scene in increasing numbers roaming and policing the streets of the Gear.

I'll refine these and hopefully post them over at http://www.heyapathy-comics-art.com/ tomorrow

ALTERNATIVE COMICS A Fashion Soot turns MONSTER

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics Fashion Show turned MONSTER!

Although I have been entirely unable to gather any proof of the anomaly, and whilst many systematic fingers have pointed at me, the fact remains that my youngest sister, like numerous others in the downtown of the Gear, has gone missing. Without a trace, nor notice and resistant of any clues, women of a certain age group seem to be being mysteriously swallowed up whole by the city. The first reports reached us when the epidemic disintegrations peaked at 13 in a single night, but one must wonder how many vanished before the phenomena was considered en vogue in the news.

I had taken little interest in the media's paranoid exploitations but was unabashedly thrown into the mystery upon my sister's involvement. The police searched every inch of our house and questioned me and my father to no end. I hadn't thought them particularly threatening or offensive as the tough facade was meant to over compensate for the fact they had nothing else to go on. They left the house in a mild state of disorder and promised our family that they would do their best.

I was asked to tidy my sisters belongings as my mother could not bare to enter her room. I knew the chamber well as had I had snuck in many times in my youth to steal change or play pranks. Sitting on the floor was pile of magazines and some overturned make-up cabinets obviously a resultant of the investigating officials. Pulling up my sisters chair, I leant forward to tidy the items.

The magazine seemed unusually crinkled and exhumed the rotting stench associated with road kill. In darting my nose away from the magazine, I came to notice the large billboard advertisement situated out side my sister’s window. How times had changed. When we moved here only 15 years ago there was a tree in that view. At least there was no advertisement. Today the giant billboard featured only a blaring white blank video screen not unlike the sunset it had so obtrusively denied us. I noticed the rotting smell again and realized it was emanating not from the periodical but from beneath my sister’s bed.

I shuttered at the odour, and lifted the mattress cautiously as careful not to poke my nose any nearer than necessary. There I uncovered a glob of composting apples, salads, half eaten candy bars, and entirely untouched whole meals, all grotesquely festering with flies.

Again the smells moved me to jump away when my eyes happened to notice a page missing an article hanging from one of the magazines. The page had been obviously tampered with as small section was cut away with scissors. The remainder of the page bore a solicitation for a new modelling agency missing only the portion revealing the locations and contact information. I thought to my self how humorously detective and coincidentally presumptuous of me to think any more of a random cutting from one of dozens of magazines. I instantly surmised that it must have been a habit of my beloved sibling but later found that every other publication remained fully intact.

I went downstairs for the supplies necessary to clean up my sisters horded food. When I returned to the room I found the mess was already removed. Momentarily unnerved, I thought to myself that someone else must have smelled it before me and rushed to clean the mess. I then sat down in the chair worrying about my sister as the moonlight reflected off the face of the billboard. What happened next was so fleeting, yet disturbing, that I was compelled to write it down in this journal, in case the visions is just a dream that might easily be forgotten.

The billboard lit up and featured a long line up of young women. They were being pushed through a studio and decorated in strange costumes. A line of sentient mirrors reached forth reshaping and stretching the decorated teens. Suddenly the models were at a party were tall Orge-ish aardvarks removed the tops of their craniums and drank their intestines like wine. The extended and fanged snouts sucked the victim’s blood dry until only a rubbery flesh and extravagant dress remained. The drained plastic figures were then quickly draped over metallic mannequins which stretched and shifted the women to the desires of an unseen photographer. Suddenly dozens of flash bulbs flickered until the billboard blew out. The entire experience lasted less than three seconds. I mean I knew  this was all of the imagination, but the brief surreal animation appeared to be so real.

This however, is not the worst of my situation. As a full night has passed since examining the room there is still no word of my sister, and stranger still no one will take responsibility for cleaning up the food wastes under her bed. Finding this peculiar I went back to the scene but was utterly disappointed at the extent of it's cleanliness. No food, not even magazines and the cosmetics were no where to be seen. I sat, for the last time ever, in my sisters chair and watched the contractors paste up a new sign. I was now certain I’d been dreaming at that no such sinister modelling agency existed responsible for the kidnappings. As I resigned my heroic aspirations of solving these weird crimes, the workers unrolled the enormous advertisement up, along, and across the giant billboard smoothly revealing the face of the new cover model. Now, no one agrees with me, nor has mother ever even attempted a glance, but I'll swear on my life the image was hers! There on the billboard all stretched out and rubbery was my poor missing sister, who no one seems to remember anymore, sprawled out with a manufactured magnificence and smiling with glee!

ALTERNATIVE COMICS Surreal Line Ups to Nowhere Now Here!

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics Nightmares from Nowhere

Perpetually obliterated by futureless and mundane routines, a large group of strange denizens crowds together forming a line. Each lost little soul waits patiently for advancement as the world all around them fades to a white out and fills endlessly with flies. Decorated with obscured and misplaced blackened orifices the crowds wallow in anonymity.

The bleak conglomerated hypnotic conformity briefly subsides as the result of a distracted young citizen who inadvertently holds up the line. Boisterously exposing his amorphous and teeth ridden malformed chest cavity, the foolish adolescent initiates agitation through this breach of social etiquette. Unable to concentrate on the holding his place in the line, the daydreamer opens his mouth, as to yawn, and begins to spit flies. Once again his deviant behaviour is reprimanded by the pushy and passing members of the now moving line.

After what is deemed an eternity, the anticipation suddenly subsides. "NEXT" bellows aggressively from a figure just ahead. In an instant the subject snaps out from his mesmerised and insect infested contemplative regurgitation. The receptionist, a tall refrigerator type looking marvel wearing radiation proof gloves ands showing only his blackened teeth, demands a numbered ticket from the next person in line. Astonished the young pupil bursts into retaliation angrily declaring that he'd heard nothing of a number system and had already been waiting forever. With the authority of an occupying force, the receptionist conducts the lost and mistaken individual back to the back of the line.

As he walks slowly into place, and his senses fall depleted, the tiny little teenager sifts off into dreams. In the visions he recalls having had been here before . This white backdrop, the mutations, and the line up itself all prove horrifically recollective and in a despairing moment of weakness, he bows his head in defeat. As the line keeps on creeping other members resign in similar fashion . No attempts at escape nor the prevention of flies, nor any unusual observation is transmuted as sound. One by one the people forget, regret and accept, turning first into monsters and then to machines.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS SURREAL SHOPPING SPREE...

\
..
Today the metropolis was blessed by a beautiful sunshine and warm springtime humidity that I found it some what difficult to resign to the studio. Pushing my papers aside and unplugging the machine, I grabbed a little cash a set out for the streets. I'd barely any plans, likely an organic brew, but I knew the inkling that my excited activity could only be nourished by some sort of shopping spree. I often find the act of searching through products and stores to be an invigorating and amusing pass time. I haven't any friends and no business to speak of, therefore my inclusion in spending gives me a deep sense of purpose.

I find the sequence of events necessary to make a purchase quite thrilling. I'll leave my house, move through transit, and arrive in a place where other people are. It makes me feel happily human. Then when I get into the shops, all the colours and choices! I can reject and collect whatever I fancy. I may file through records or racks of new fashions or purchase some food stocks or maybe an improvised treat. The shoe store is fun but not so much as the general  centers. Here you can ask people questions and peruse to no end. It is absolutely exhilarating when a package jumps off of the shelf and lands in my hands. Only some amount and 99 cents with all sorts of wonderful graphics and promises!

Sometimes I don't even bring my new toys home. If I've forgotten their importance or they become to much to handle I'll simply toss them aside and wait for my next inclination. Isn't it wonderful enough to just buy things! Some of the stores even play loud music and have sparkling lights with magazine cut outs inviting you in. If you come across such a magnificence you simply have explore.

I happened upon one such outlet on this afternoon's adventure. It was an enormous mega-establishment specializing in products with fancy packages all of which were either endorsed by celebrities or as seen on TV. I knew that this was my station. I strolled past the electronic greeter beaming with the utmost of confidence. Here I would shop and impress all that could see. I was certain that my social standings were about to be greatly enhanced as a result of my boisterous and skilful consumerist display . Yes, I knew how to shop, of that I was most confident.

Entering the isle ways I was quickly taken aback by a striking design. It appeared like a golden boulder sitting upon a pile of dull gravel. For a moment I worried that this was too good to be true and concerned myself deeply that my shopping may have ended to soon. Yes I wanted it, I'd heard of it, it was original, unique and entirely for me! No other parcel, nor package on any of the other shelves retained visibility. It was like me and the product were alone at a decadent ball. The muzak accelerated with a strange symphonic majesty and all of the lights in the store seemed to dim around us. I reached out in an instant, that lasted forever, and took hold of the box with the most joyous delight.

With the product now firmly gripped in my hands the entire store around me and my purchase turned pitch black. Standing in awe of the spotlight and my discovery, I surmised that this must be one of those retail promotions and that I had been made a champion. The proprietor and the public witnessed my extravagance and intended to reward and praise me for my expert consumerism. I knew that someday my genius would be celebrated for I was a shopper among shoppers in the highest degree!

The excitement crescendoed nearly beyond my control as electric currents surged from the insides of my teeth. Then in a kaleidoscope frenzy of logos and promos the entire room disappeared.

I saw a factory full of peoples from far away places.
I saw an armed soldier shuffling them in
and out through wired gates.
I saw a smoke stack and a river coiling with fear.
I heard the engines of planes, trucks and trains bursting my ears.
I saw a group of suited creatures, situated around a long desk,
each laughing and arguing with uncensored jest.
Then I saw the studies, and findings of man,
mass hypnosis, manipulated senses and of the wars in their plans.
I saw my product reproduced and purchased by many
and finally a garbage dump and transference of each penny.
The metal money was melted and churned into weapons
and before my purchase expired ten new ones had crept in.

Dizzily stepping backwards I bumped into another shopper who grunted at the unintentional obtrusion. I politely apologised excusing my self and turned towards the lines. Everything seemed normal again. I resolved that my vertiginous spell was likely caused by an empty stomach, unconsciously attempting to refute any possibility of the event being a side effect of shopping. Proceeding to the cashier I placed my purchase on the counter. "Cash or Credit?”. I hesitated,  looked down at the product, and before I could answer with  I found myself running down the wet and thunderous streets in a state of cursed  terror frantically seeking an advertisement-free route home. more art at http://www.heyapathy-comics-art.com/

Alternative Comics SURREAL INNOVATIONS

HEY APATHY! Alternative Comics SURREAL INNOVATIONS

I had the unfortunate mishap of losing an entire nights sleep after perusing several catalogues in search of a phone. The research ended early enough but the possibilities left me hyper sensitive and excitable to an extent preventing slumber. I had, for the first time, just heard of this strange and absurdist device which actually permits people to take their telephones outside. At first I laughed and envision an endlessly obtrusive stream of mingling wires leading back to their ports with polite pedestrians lifting them up so others could pass. I thought of skateboarders getting stuck and flying vigorously head first while jay walkers would be frequently towed down the roadways like a hero from a run away wagon in a western. Ludicrous! Phones that can go for a walk! What science fiction will perverted capitalists try to sell us next?

Asides from the improbability of such a phone, the more pressing question seemed to me to be why would anyone want to take a phone around with them. Understandably others, unlike my self, do have communications of a social parameter and often appear to even enjoy the company of others. But still, to have one’s associates able to find and talk to you at any given time? Absurd, not even the loneliest nor most talkative people in all of the lands could have such a desire or so much to say. Besides is not the phone primarily a tool for discovering the whereabouts of meetings and business?

At any rate I found the additional features of these "phones" quite startling as well. Some of them played music and others viewed films. I have used the telephone to make concert and theatre reservations but how on earth could it be used in their place? The device also promised to deliver me mail, let me surf the net, excel at social networking and replace my aging epidermal covering with that of an eighteen year old!

On top of all this the phone could play games, a handful of math puzzles and extensive collection military training programs were a part of the deal! My phone would even be a book as long as it wasn't a controversial, independent, or good one. And for an additional monthly fee and a subliminally increasable rate, this new technology could regulate my diet, eat and digest all of my food, find my true love, and replace the English language with a newly improvised simplification entitled "texting".

So you might surmise that as a result of discovering all these amazing innovations I became excited to the point beyond rest. But alas I must say that it was not all this fictional nonsense which kept my mind racing all night but it was in fact a creeping revelation dredged up from the study. Only a few minutes passed before I started  putting the pieces of the mystery together. I started thinking about all the unusual people I'd seen out on the streets. There seemed to be more and more crazies talking to themselves these days. I had also noticed a strange affliction in which the denizens of the gear were rendered in an awkward position, holding their hands to their ears with bent over postures. I had disregarded both of these peculiarities many times over assuming that Toronto was simply insane or that the elbow to ear epidemic was a side affect of SARS, MAD COW, or some TERRIBLE FLU. I even disregarded the perpetual ringing of alarm clocks that I'd heard at the movies and on the tram as some sort of hip new musical trend. So why was I thinking about these things? How came it that incidents I'd all but forgotten had tenaciously resurfaced after reading up on futuristic phones?

My eyes burst open and “E equalled MC squared” as, in a feverish sweat, I leaped to my window. Pulling back the blinds I glanced out to city. I squinted my eyes at those strange human afflictions I'd so readily ignored and low and behold they were not of diseased mind, nor body, but each and every last person was holding a phone!
